The Big, Scary "B"... Birth.

So I've been thinking a lot lately about actually having a person come out of me and it's kinda freaking me out. I would really like to have a natural childbirth but don't really know anything about anything. We told our Dr that that's what we wanted and she kinda laughed and said, "The epidural rate at this hospital is 95%." I wanted to be like, Ok, great. Thanks for your support, I'll find someone else who won't laugh at me. But...I didn't.

Anyway, at our last appointment a different doctor was telling us about childbirth classes and things offered like that at the hospital. Does anyone know about birthing classes that are for natural childbirth? And any other tips or books that would be good, or any ideas at all? I'd really appreciate it!! :)

Hi Stacey! First of all, congrats on having a little girl! They're so F.U.N!!!

I wasn't really sure what I wanted at first, and I took a Lamaze class which included regular childbirth information as well. It was really open to whatever you thought, but stressed the Lamaze style of pain management a little more. It was great. I was actually able to go my first 13 hours without the epidural, and I ended up having one for the remaining 9 hours....I was glad I did....I was exhausted after no sleep the night before, either.

If you are SURE that you want to go without epidural (I don't say natural because with and without the epidural, it's all natural...you're pushing a baby out of your hoo-ha, so either way, you're no wimp!), and all you need is a support group, I've heard that the Bradley Method classes are great. I didn't take one, but I've heard they're very strict about the epidural being bad and breathing being good. One of my friends took it and has 3 children without the epidural.

So that's what I know. I've also heard that if you can at least go through labor (not necessarily the birth) in the tub, it's easier at helping you dilate because it relieves the pressure with back labor....which I had.

Good luck!!!

Good luck! I don't know much about it at all, but my sister in-law gets claustrophobic with an epidural so she doesn't have them anymore.

I was really freaked out about having Polly, at one point I decided that I was fine with her staying in me for the rest of my life. But by 6 months I was ready to do anything to get her out. :)I was really surprised at how calm the hospital was, nobody was running around being all chaotic like they are on the movies. So you will do great, there are only about a dozen nurses there to help you with whatever you need & prepared for just about anything!

Laura loaned me her copy of "The Birth Book" by William Sears and his wife when I was pregnant. They are big into "natural" births and have a lot of recommendations that you might like. You should give it a read.

There's really nothing to be afraid of though. I was scared, too, mostly because I didn't have any idea what to expect. But giving birth was the easiest (and most enjoyable) part about being pregnant. I even told my hubby the day our baby was born, that if that's all there was to having a kid, I could have a million. It's the nine months before it that really sucked. (But I did have an epidural and absolutely loved it.)

I obviously know very little about the subject but you know who really knows is Lani. You can get to her blog from dizzlefig.blogspot.com - they became really good friends after Ryn. She's really huge into the whole natural childbirth thing... I think she has a blog dedicated to it. I'll see if I can find it! birthfaith.blogspot.com She has lots of websites about it. My recommendation is to research it and not feel talked into anything by anybody. Either way. Do what is right for YOU and Cody and your baby. Having a baby is an amazing miracle no matter what. EJR always says, "It's natural to have a baby, it's natural that it hurts and it's natural that when I hurt, I want pain meds!" So that can be considered "natural" too! :) Love you! Thanks for wombing my little niece!!!

Yeah, I was going to send you to Lani too but Amy beat me to it. She is AWESOME and knows a ton of stuff, and she'll have great books and other resources to recommend to you. If you don't have her email address, I'll send it to you.

Don't be scared. You can do it (whichever way you choose) and you're going to love it.

We just started a childbirth class here in Rexburg. It talks about everything and doesn't really sway one way or another, but instead gives you information about the drugs, natural, etc. Just call the hospital, if you're interested.

I know of two people who have given birth naturally very recently and they raved about it. You should definitely read this blog post: http://brittnabs.blogspot.com/2008/05/introducingmiss-paisley-anne.html You'd better hurry though because she's putting her blog settings over to Private soon.
Chase's sister, Tyla, gave birth to a 10 pound baby naturally and she has a ton of great advice. I'm sure she wouldn't mind answering any questions. Her blog is http://www.tylamajors.blogspot.com/& her e-mail is tyla@cableone.net. Good luck & don't let that Dr. discourage you.

Stacey,

This is your cousin in-law Jessica. I saw that either you or Cody left a comment on Amber's blog and thought I'd say hi and congrats on the baby girl! And I just wanted to say that I think your awesome for wanting to go natural. That's what I did with both girls and yes it was hard but oh so worth it. I plan on doing it with this next one as well. If I can help with anything let me know! Feel free to check out our blog!

Hey Stacey this is your cousin kind of, Emily Dobson. I ran into your blog from jessica speeds blog. Congrats on the baby!!! Hey birth does not have to be painful and scary!!!My sister had a baby totally natural at her home a month ago and she said it just felt like cramps. She took a class called hypnobirthing which is pretty much just taking the fear out of birth so its painless. Any ways good luck there are tons of books and info about it. Way to go natural is go good for you and your baby.
